The Sport of Never Growing Up: Innocence, Tragedy & Survival

Jean-Pierre Allard's memoir provides a vivid portrait of growing up in a predominantly working-class French-Canadian city, extensive uncanny coincidences connecting people and events throughout his life. The memoir blends personal tragedy with cultural and political history, using sports and music as frameworks for understanding survival, resilience, and finding meaning through life's hardships.

From the loss of his father at the tender age of 11 to the suicide of his brother when Jean-Pierre was 23, followed by two devastating strokes suffered by his wife, the first one 3-month post-partum, music becomes his constant companion through decades of hardship, with references spanning Elvis, Dylan, The Beatles, Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, Steely Dan, and countless others.

The Sport of Never Growing Up chronicles his coming-of-age in the '50-60's in Eastview (Vanier), Ontario, intertwining with Jean-Pierre's lifelong passions of sports and music, to his civil servant career and further exploits as a sports and music writer.
