Born in Cape Breton Island, Nova Scotia, Canada, he moved to Ottawa (Ontario), to start a career in Human Resources Management with Bell Northern Research, later to move onto Digital Equipment of Canada, in Boston, and Toronto.  After six years, he accepted a position with Digital Equipment of Canada, as Manufacturing HR Representative.
